Job Summary

McAuliffe Regional CPS is a public school of approximately 265 students, open to all students free of charge, operating under a charter granted by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  McAuliffe Regional CPS employs research-based school structures and teaching strategies essential to middle school success, such as being a small school with small classes, learning through long-term, hands-on investigations known as learning expeditions, interactive fieldwork, and daily meetings with a faculty advisor for each student. 

The ELL teacher is a necessary support for students who are still mastering academic English. He or she provides in- and out-of-class support to these students, teaching both content from their core classes and specific English language skills. He or she also provides some support to other professionals who teach these students.

 

All staff demonstrate professional and personal growth, collegiality, strong relationships with parents, and reliability on administrative duties.  All staff commit to helping the school achieve its mission: to cultivate within each member of a diverse student body, through the Expeditionary Learning design, an intense commitment to self and to community, the courage and insight to set high standards for academic and personal success, and the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to achieve those standards.  Founding Staff will also promote the building of organizational systems by participating on committees and special events, such as Open Houses.

 

WORK SCHEDULE

  • The ELL teacher works roughly 25 hours per week. Typically he or she will be at the school from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday and from 9:30 to 12:30 on Thursday, but can change hours with permission of the principal if it is necessary to best meet student needs.
  • The student school calendar is 180 school days for students and follows the calendar of the Framingham district schools.
  • The teaching calendar includes at least two additional days after the student school calendar year ends (to tie up loose ends, allow time for reflection and celebration, and prioritize/plan summer work) and, subject to your date of hire, the month of August preceding the next school year
  • There may be occasional evening events at which the ELL Teacher would speak with parents.

 

PREPS AND DUTIES

The following is subject to change and variation by position:

  • Review of testing and other academic data to determine needs of individual students.
  • Push-in services to ELL students in classes on a regular schedule, commensurate with demonstrated need.
  • Pull-out services for ELL students on a regular schedule, commensurate with demonstrated need.
  • Collaborative planning with core subject teachers to provide sheltered content instruction and to help other teachers teach ELL students in the general classroom.
  • Management of testing (MEPA/MELA-O and diagnostics as needed) for ELL students.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

 

PLANNING

Using materials from core classes (primarily humanities), design lessons and activities to improve students’ ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend academic and social English.

 

Using the Massachusetts DOE’s web site and standards for English Language Learners, review literature on Structured English Immersion to ensure compliance with regulations and accepted professional practices.

 

INSTRUCTION

Work with students in core classes to help them to understand English material, complete writing, and access literature.

 

Pull small groups aside for modified lessons that include extra supports to help students understand content.

 

Instruct individual students or small groups outside of humanities classes on a regular schedule in sheltered content

 

ASSESSMENT and PARENT COMMUNICATION

Provide specific, standards-based feedback to students on their academic work.

 

Incorporate results of formal testing (e.g., the MELA-O) into instruction.

 

Collaborate as needed with core subject teachers to write report cards, or write report cards independently.

 

Talk to and meet with parents of ELL students as needed to address
