Pollution

Pollution is the contamination of air, water, or soil by substances that are harmful to living organisms. Pollution can occur naturally (through volcanic eruptions and other natural occurrences), or as the result of human activities. Types of Pollution

  • Water pollution occurs when rain water runoff from urban areas, from agricultural land, and from mining sites makes its way back to a large body of water (a river, lake, or ocean) and into the ground.

  • Air pollution comes from many different sources such as factories, power plants, dry cleaners, cars, buses, trucks, and even wildfires.

  • Land pollution is when harmful substances enter the ground and hinder the growth of organisms that take their nutrients from the soil.
