Macro invertebrates are aquatic invertebrates that are visible to the human eye. A macro Invertebrate can be anything from a leech to a mayfly. The difference between macro and micro invertebrates is that all aquatic bacteria are micro-invertebrates whereas a macro-invertebrate is larger than a bacterium so that it can be seen without visual aid. Macro Invertebrates are often used to determine the health of a body of water. The presence of pollution-sensitive macro invertebrates indicates that the water is healthy.
